Open Air Museum Ballenberg

If you are staying at a Grindelwald hotel and you ask the staff where you can experience life as it was in Switzerland before technology and tourism took such a predominant role, they will likely tell you to visit the open air museum Ballenberg.  This unique museum gives visitors the opportunity to experience rural farm-life as it was many years ago.  The museum is an exciting Grindelwald excursion that will fascinate both old and young as they watch live demonstrations by men and women wearing period costumes.  Open from mid-April through the end of October, Ballenberg is located about ten minutes from the town of Brienz.  Located on approximately 160 acres, Ballenberg is a network of wooden Alpine huts, stone buildings and perfectly restored farmsteads bring to life how rural farmers lived several centuries ago. World Snow Festival in Grindelwald

Each January, Grindelwald hosts the World Snow Festival.  Grindelwald comes to life as artists from around the world descend on this beautiful Swiss mountain ski resort to create unique pieces of art out of snow.  The festival, which is held in the center of the village on the natural ice rink, attracts tourists from around the world who want to see how artists and sculptors use snow to create larger than life figures and sculptures.  The event delights people of all ages as it gives new meaning to “building snowmen.”  The six-day event began in 1983 when Japanese artists carved a very large Heidi in the snow.  The event has grown since then to include artists from around the world.
